Gay News Magazine Headlines (T24T-2)

Gauge: In the May 28, 2009, issue of Metro Weekly, Jake Nodar, interviewed for the feature "Out in the Wild," stated that he believed himself to be the first openly gay man featured on a Discovery Channel program (Out of the Wild: The Alaska Experiment). That distinction, however, belongs to longtime gay activist Rodger McFarlane, who died May 15, and appeared on the 1998 season of Eco-Challenge Morocco on the Discovery Channel.

Gauge: From Boise to Barcelona, Shanghai to Omaha, June is a full month of GLBT pride celebrations far beyond Washington's own impressive offering. Among them, one is so tantalizingly close that if Capital Pride doesn't satisfy your cravings, this June 20 to 21 fete is standing by: Baltimore Pride.
"If folks -- especially from D.C. -- haven't been to Baltimore Pride, they should come and check it out," says Rahne Alexander. "It's a little smaller, but it's a ton of fun."
A Santa Cruz, Calif., transplant who experienced her first Baltimore Pride in 2002, Alexander is now part of the festivities with her band, The Degenerettes, for which she sings and plays guitar, along with her partner and drummer, Kristen Anchor and bass-player Chrissy Howland. This year, The Degnerettes will play for Baltimore Pride's Saturday-night "block party," just ahead of headliner Amber. ...more
Gauge: Though the air-conditioning kept the sweltering D.C. evening at bay, participants at the Capital Pride Town Hall: D.C.'s HIV/AIDS Crisis could not avoid creating their own heat.
It came from moderator Michael Crawford asking panelists how to "light a fire under" Mayor Adrian Fenty's administration. It came from moderator Toni Young saying that participants needed to somehow "instill a fire" into the GLBT community to re-focus on HIV/AIDS. The two hours of insight, friction and examination were characterized by Vincent Micone accordingly: "What you're seeing on this panel is the spark we were hoping to see."
About 60 people gathered in a meeting room of the Academy for Educational Development, off the intersection of Florida Avenue and T Street NW, Monday evening, June 8, for this discussion presented by DC Black Pride, Capital Pride, and the Washington Blade. Micone, as chair the Capital Pride Educational and Cultural Events Committee, kept everything moving as four panelists fielded questions from three moderators and the audience. ...more

Nickles submitted his four-page opinion to the D.C. Board of Elections & Ethics, which is deliberating whether to approve or deny a request by the pastor of a Maryland church and six other District residents that the board allow voters to decide on the same-sex marriage law in a referendum.

"As expressed in the [Human Rights Act], the established public policy of the District of Colu ...

More than 100 people packed a D.C. Board of Elections & Ethics hearing room Wednesday as supporters and opponents of same-sex marriage presented opposing arguments regarding the validity of a proposed referendum to overturn the city's same-sex marriage recognition law.

At issue, according to election board chair Errol Arthur, is whether the proposed referendum would cover one or more of eight restricted subject areas that are barred from going before the voters, including a proposal to raise or lower taxes or a proposal that would "unlawfully discriminate" under the D.C. Human Rights Act.
