A new alliance

Chris stopped hiding what he calls his "assets" almost two years ago, he said, after he joined the East Aurora High School Gay-Straight Alliance.

East is one of 10 Fox Valley public high schools where students have formed gay-straight alliances to talk about topics from gay rights to bullies to sexual identity.

Teens have started the clubs -- most within the past five years -- at West Aurora, Oswego, Oswego East, Yorkville, Waubonsie Valley, Neuqua Valley, St. Charles North and St. Charles East high schools and the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. Students and faculty are looking into starting gay-straight alliances at Kaneland and Geneva high schools.
