The ACLU of Tennessee has asked the Warren County District Attorney’s office to request assistance from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) in investigating hate crimes against a gay Warren County man.

Neal Anthony, who has been the victim of at least three attacks on his home, remains concerned for his safety and told Out & About Newspaper that he “dreads the nights and weekends” because he is afraid of another attack.

A Warren County, Tennessee gay man is pleading for help – from anyone – after local and state law enforcement can’t seem to stop vandals from attacking his home and spraying painting death threats on the side of his house and barn.

Neal Anthony, whose home has been the target of at least eight attacks over the past year, lives in fear, and wonders why state and local law enforcement can’t (or won’t he says) put a stop to the crimes. The latest attack occurred in the early morning hours of Friday, May 23, 2008.

Vanderbilt University’s Faculty Senate has unanimously approved a resolution asking Vanderbilt Chancellor Nick Zeppos to include protection of transgender students, faculty and staff in the university’s non-discrimination and anti-harassment policy.

Tennessee says NO to bigotry and ignorance

NASHVILLE - A House subcommittee voted Tuesday - for the second time and on a more formal basis - to kill state Rep. Stacey Campfield's (pictured) bill to prohibit teaching about homosexuality in Tennessee schools.

The move was coupled with a request that the state Department of Education investigate whether homosexuality is being discussed now in schools.

Bruce Opie, legislative liaison for the department, said "we will follow through" and report back to legislators "in a couple of weeks."

At a Feb. 19 meeting, Opie said he was unaware of any such instruction in kindergarten through eighth grade, which would be covered by Campfield's bill.

The roll call vote was 6-4 in favor of House Education Committee Chairman Les Winningham's motion to send the bill to the Department of Education, in effect killing it.

All Republicans on the panel - including Reps. Harry Brooks of Knoxville and Richard Montgomery of Seymour - sided with Campfield. All Democrats on the panel opposed him.
