Superiority Texas Style: Lesbian Tops Straight Man (Gene Locke)

In the recent race for mayor of Houston, Texas it boiled down to a male lawyer and a lesbian.

Gene Locke is the male lawyer who tried every dirty trick he could to trash Annise Parker. Gene Locke focused on the fact that Annise Parker is an open and proud lesbian. His campaign spent many thousands of dollars trying to drive home this fact, in hopes that would be enough.

Hey Gene, evidently Houston citizens aren't as bigotted as you!

In my dreams I hope that people were able to see being Lesbian has nothing to do with one's ability to perform a job. But sadly, I wouldn't be surprised if it has more to do with the fact Gene Locke is a lawyer.

But no matter what the reason, Gene Locke (a straight man - we presume) was topped by Annise Parker (a lesbian).

I hope she used a really big strap on.

Gay ex-Lauderdale commissioner joins mayoral race

BY AMY SHERMAN
The Miami Herald

After Mayor Jim Naugle enraged Fort Lauderdale gays last year with a rant about ''homosexual activity'' in public restrooms, activists pledged to elect a gay-friendly mayor in the 2009 election.

One obvious choice: Dean Trantalis, a gay man who had served one term on the City Commission.

But when Trantalis didn't show interest, some gay activists signed up to support City Commissioner Cindi Hutchinson -- a straight, but gay-friendly candidate.

Then Trantalis changed his mind, confirming Thursday he is running.

Four openly gay candidates run for Ga. legislature

By MATT SCHAFER
Southern Voice

State Rep. Karla Drenner (D-Avondale Estates) won her fifth term in office at noon May 2 as qualifying for the 2008 general election closed without either a Democrat or Republican signing up to seek her House District 86 seat.

As qualifying closed, the odds increased that Drenner would have another gay lawmaker to join her at the state Capitol as three openly gay people will seek seats in the state legislature. On the last day, Georgia Equality board member and Democrat Kevin Clark qualified for the state Senate District 2 seat. He faces two opponents in the primary, Bettye Anne Battiste and Lester Jackson.

Moments after qualifying ended, businessperson Keith Gross announced he is seeking to be the first openly gay man in the Georgia General Assembly, and Keisha Waites announced her candidacy for House District 61 Monday.

HRC endorses 14 for U.S. Senate

By JOSHUA LYNSEN, Washington Blade

The Human Rights Campaign is endorsing 14 contenders for U.S. Senate, but an openly gay candidate from North Carolina is not among them.

HRC endorsed Sens. Max Baucus (D-Mont), who scored 67 on the last HRC scorecard; Joe Biden (D-Del.), who scored 78; Susan Collins (R-Maine), who scored 78; Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), who scored 89; Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), who scored 78; John Kerry (D-Mass.), who scored 100; Mary Landrieu (D-La.), who scored 89; Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), who scored 100; Carl Levin (D-Mich.), who scored 78; and Jack Reed (D-R.I.), who scored 89.

Also endorsed were the Senate campaigns of Reps. Mark Udall (D-Colo.), who scored 100 on the last scorecard, and Tom Udall (D-N.M.), who scored 75. Senate candidates Al Franken of Minnesota and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, both Democrats, rounded out the endorsement list.

Gay-Baiting politics in Texas, as usual

PLANO — An openly gay City Council candidate is being used like a pawn in an effort by right-wing conservatives to seize control of the Collin County Commission.

This is according to County Commissioner Phyllis Cole, who faces an April 8 runoff against Matt Shaheen for the Precinct 2 seat she’s occupied for the last 17 years.

An anonymous e-mail reportedly was sent out last week attacking Cole for her support of Collin County Teen Court coordinator Justin Nichols, 23. The e-mail stated,“Look who Phyllis appointed to work with your kids,” and contained a link to a March 14 Dallas Voice article about Nichols, who’s vying to become the first-ever openly gay member of the City Council in the May 10 municipal election.

“I’m very disturbed about the whole thing, because I like what Justin does, I like Justin,” Cole said. “I don’t want to be a commissioner anymore if this is what’s going to be involved, taking a nice young man like Justin and hanging him out to dry.”Both Cole and Nichols said they were unsure how many people received the e-mail. Cole suggested that her opponent, Shaheen, was responsible for the attack, but he denied that. “Neither my campaign nor I are behind any such e-mail,” Shaheen said in a written statement. Shaheen didn’t respond to a request for further comment.

“This was the whole game plan,” Cole said. “They’re going to be running busloads of people from Prestonwood Bible study to vote.”

“We’re going to lose the whole damn thing on top of losing this election,” she said. Nichol said he’s been involved with Teen Court since he was a freshman in high school, when he served as a juror in a pilot version of the program. Nichols, who came out as gay when he was 16, became coordinator in October 2006 after the commission unanimously voted to fund Teen Court countywide. Teen Court allows people 18 and under charged with class-C misdemeanors to avoid having convictions go on their records. Cases are prosecuted, defended and adjudicated by fellow teens. Juveniles prosecuted in Teen Court are far less likely to reoffend, according to Nichols, and have contributed more than 5,000 volunteer hours in the form of community service.

“For all I know, it was some fringe radicals who are resorting to childish tactics,” Nichols said. “It was sent from an anonymous address, which is cowardly to say the least.”

“These small-minded people are going to do what they do, and we just need to stand strong,” said CCGLA President Morris Garcia, a Plano resident who supports Nichols.

Scientific studies show gays are no more likely than straight people, and in fact may be less likely, to commit child sexual abuse. “Activists and politicians who say otherwise are simply appealing to ignorance and fear to mobilize anti-gay bias for political gain,” the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force said in a recent paper on the subject.

POLAND: Lying politicians; worldwide

Polish LGBT rights groups say they have been betrayed by the country's new Prime Minister.

In his first speech to parliament Donald Tusk said that his government would not sign the European Union charter of fundamental rights, despite earlier assurances by his Civic Platform party that the document would be signed.

Gay candidates victorious across the U.S.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Dozens of openly gay and lesbian candidates running in municipal and state legislative races across the country won their elections Tuesday, according to the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund. Of the record 71 candidates endorsed by the group in 2007, at least 31 won their races on Tuesday, while 10 were elected earlier this year. At least three more endorsed candidates received enough votes to advance to runoff elections.

Victory Fund president and CEO Chuck Wolfe said the growing number of out candidates demonstrates the gay community’s increasing involvement in electoral politics. “This is the path to change. We are not content to sit on the sidelines and hope that others do the right thing for our community. We will step up and lead the fight for a more equal and fair America, and we will win,” Wolfe said.

Russian politicians too?

"They have secret homosexual relationships but at the same time they do all their best in order to slander gays and lesbians. "

"I am ready to prove at any court or prosecution office that deputy Chuev is gay and to produce corresponding proofs."
