A trip through the Gayborhood

By KATIE HUTTON Philadelphia Daily News

"Philadelphia - Get your history straight and your nightlife gay," is the catchphrase of the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corp.'s gay tourism campaign. It will be put to the test this week as thousands of gay visitors come to town for this year's Equality Forum.

Besides the 34 panels, 14 parties and 15 special events planned for this year's forum, Bruce Yelk, director of gay initiatives at the GPTMC, suggests that visitors make time to see these sites of special interest to the GLBT community.

Historic marker at Independence Hall: On July 4, 1965, a group of gay and lesbian picketers held the first Reminder Day outside Independence Hall to "remind" the public of their existence. This plaque, on the north corner of 6th and Chestnut streets, marks the first GLBT civil-rights protest.

PHILADELPHIA Mayor to officiate gay union ceremony

Mayor John Street, once regarded as an enemy of the gay community for opposing same-sex partner benefits, is to preside over his first same-sex commitment ceremony this weekend.

Street said he was asked to officiate at the ceremony for Ryan Bunch and Micah Mahjoubian, a longtime colleague, on Saturday at City Hall.
"Micah is my friend. He has been in my campaign and has been in my administration for eight years," Street said. "I've come to respect him as a person, and if this is something he would like for me to do, then I'd like to do it for him."

Boy Scouts' Rent Hiked Over Gay Ban

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The city has decided that the Boy Scouts chapter here must pay fair-market rent of $200,000 a year for its city-owned headquarters because it refuses to permit gay Scouts.

The organization's Cradle of Liberty Council, which currently pays $1 a year in rent, must pay the increased amount to remain in its downtown building past May 31, Fairmount Park Commission president Robert N.C. Nix said Wednesday.
The council adopted a nondiscrimination policy in 2003 but was ordered to revoke it by the National Council, which said local chapters cannot deviate from national rules barring participation by anyone who is openly gay.
The Cradle of Liberty Council serves about 64,000 scouts in Philadelphia and its suburbs.

Philadelphia victory for gay couples

Having served their time, convicted drug dealers Daniel Mangini and Steven Roberts, a couple for more than 20 years, were eager to resume their life together.

Federal probation policy forbids felons on parole from associating with other felons unless they are spouses or blood relatives.

On July 31, in a legal victory that could set a precedent in constitutional law for same-sex couples, Judge Marvin Katz of U.S. District Court in Philadelphia ruled that the two men have the same right to associate during their probation as do heterosexual married couples.
