BANGOR, Maine (AP)Maine Gov. John Baldacci on Tuesday urged residents to vote against repealing the state's same-sex marriage law while acknowledging his past opposition to gay marriage.
With one week remaining before a vote, Baldacci said he once preferred civil unions to gay marriages.
"I came to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage," said Baldacci, who signed the bill recognizing same-sex marriages after the Legislature passed it last May.

"We work with hundreds of young people who are rejected by their families because of who they are. We are overwhelmed with gratitude that Bea saw that LGBT youth deserve as much love and support as any other young person, and that she placed so much value in the work we do to protect them, and to help them rebuild their lives." says Executive Director Carl Siciliano.

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP)A growing number of asylum seekers are using U.S. immigration courts to argue that their sexual orientation makes it too dangerous for them to return home.
Victoria Neilson, an attorney for the New York-based Immigration Equality, said the nonprofit group successfully won 55 asylum cases last year using sexual orientation as grounds, a record for the organization. That's a jump from 2007 when the group won 30 cases.
The exact number nationally is unknown since U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services doesn't keep data on those asylum cases.
