UPDATE (Lurleen): I've added a transcript below the video.
I have to put this late post in because I want to give kudos to U.S. Representative Barney Frank for doing what many should have done at these town hall meetings:
Transcript
Wingnut: Why do you continue to support a Nazi policy, as Obama has expressley supported this policy, why are you supporting it?
The Honerable Barney Frank: WHen you ask me that question, I am gonna revert to my ethnic heritage, and answer your question with a question. On what planet do you spend most of your time?...You want me to answer the question? As you stand there with a picture of the president defaced to look like Hitler, and compare the effort to increase health care to the Nazis, my answer to you is as I said before, it is a tribute to the 1st Amendment that this kind of vile contemptable nonsense is so freely propegated. Ma'am, trying to have a conversation with you would be like trying to argue with a diningroom table - I have no interest in doing it.
Some folks may not agree with his tone but he was right on. How can you have a coherent conversation with someone who so determined to paint President Obama as a Nazi?
Now watch hoatch how soon before Hannity and company attack Frank. How long will it be before One News Now and the rest of the religious right links his words to his lgbt sexual orientation?
While you're at it, count how many columns will be written at Town Hall attacking Frank for telling it like it is.
And lastly, if these things come to pass, note the strange dynamic of how some folks think it is alright to carry a loaded gun to an event where the President is speaking but somehow think that it's wrong to rightfully call someone out for being an idiot.
I'm with Jesse at Pandagon...this sh*t is so bigoted and disjointed that you don't know where to begin.
We have now reached the point in the American dialogue where a Jew from a country full of Jews is a Nazi because his people have banded together to provide for their own health. But those same Jews are also the Jews of liberal fascism, because everyone who lives under a socialized health care system is also a victim of the system, even if they inflicted it on themselves. So, at the end of the day, Israelis are both the Nazis and the Jews of liberal fascism, brutalizing themselves under their terrible regime of paying for their own improved health.
Wow, even I don’t know what the hell is going on here.
It's an open thread! Pleeeeease feel free to chat, blogwhore, and link-share in the comment thread...
My cartoon sockpuppet Bookworm Bob & I have been AWL (absent without leave) for a week while I've been at NetRoots Nation, so "we" haven't been posting our regular Tuesday, Thursday, and Weekend This & That: Open Thread diaries for y'all. We're remedying that tonight with the returreturn of cartoon sockpuppet Bookworm Bob & my Tuesday Evening This & That: Open Thread diary.
We "need" these regular open threads, don't we? So, below is what the sockpuppet Bookworm Bob & I have been looking at so far this week.
Examiner.com's Federal court orders TN schools to stop blocking LGBT websites:
The ACLU of Tennessee has reached a settlement with two Tennessee school districts for agreeing to stop using Internet filters that block access to information about LGBT issues, reports the School Library Journal. The Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools and Knox County Schools agreed to the settlement after the ACLU filed a lawsuit on May 19th saying that the filters were censoring important educational information.
Tricia Herzfeld, an attorney with the ACLU, said,
"We're pleased that these schools are finally living up to their legal obligation to allow the free and open exchange of ideas and information. Schools that censor educational information out of some misguided assumption that anything about LGBT people is automatically sexual or inappropriate are doing a disservice to their students."
Keeeeeeeeeewl!
Huffington Post's Compromise Co-Op Proposal Won't Lower Costs, Government Study Showed:
...The U.S. General Accounting Office produced a report on cooperatives in March 2000 that was mostly sour on the idea. Using five different co-ops as examples, the study concluded that on the key function -- lowering the cost of insurance -- these non-profit insurance pools came up well short.
"The cooperatives' potential to reduce overall premiums is limited be cause (1) they lack sufficient leverage as a result of their limited market share; (2) the cooperatives have not been able to produce administrative cost savings for insurers; or (3) their state laws and regulations already restrict to differing degrees the amount insurers can vary the premiums charged different groups purchasing the same health plan."
Part of the problem was availability. While cooperatives sought to provide more choice of insurance to participants, oftentimes they failed to get consumers a broader range of options. "Not all plans are available in all areas served by each cooperative, and individual employers using some cooperatives may limit the choice of plans their employees can select," the study concluded...
It appears the plan that the Blue Dog Democrats are pushing apparently isn't going to do much societal good if the societal good we're aiming for from this healthcare debate is to reign in costs. Reigning in cost is the way is supposepposedly the required outcome for long term, making sure healthcare doesn't take too big a bite out of our economy. Check out the report and see what you think.
KETV's Driver Wants License To Match Gender Identity:
The Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles has a new set of challenges. More and more gay, lesbian and transgendered people want their driver's licenses to reflect their identities.Posha Towers is one of those people. She will soon undergo sex reassignment surgery. In the meantime, she has legally changed her name from Dominick to Posha.
...Now Towers wants her new photo ID on her driver's license to reflect her feminine image. She said that's easier said then done at the Department of Motor Vehicles.
"They said, 'We cannot give you a new ID picture,'" Towers said. "'You have to take the same picture you already have in the system.' I said, 'Why? I don't even look like that picture anymore.'"
Only after complaining to the mayor, her state senator and KETV NewsWatch 7's I-Team did the state of Nebraska agree to change her picture.
Wow. Just wow.
New York Times' DNA Evidence Can Be Fabricated, Scientists Show:
Scientists in Israel have demonstrated that it is possible to fabricate DNA evidence, undermining the credibility of what has been considered the gold standard of proof in criminal cases...."You can just engineer a crime scene," said Dan Frumkin, lead author of the paper, which has been published online by the journal Forensic Science International: Genetics. "Any biology undergraduate could perform this."
Dr. Frumkin is a founder of Nucleix, a company based in Tel Aviv that has developed a test to distinguish real DNA samples from fake ones that it hopes to sell to forensics laboratories...
Eep. Well, this is pretty scary news.
Wiener story of the day: Autumn finds Wiener World!
While in Pittsburg this last week, I strolled off the beaten path on Saturday and photographed the sign for Wiener World. The restaurant was closed for the night, so I don't know if how the wieners there taste, but how kewl is it that there's a whole wide world for wieners?
rs?
By the way, if you've ever eaten at this Wiener World, please give us your review of their wieners!
So anywho, I love the concept of Wiener World so much that this is going to be one of the three graphics I'm going to regularly rotate through for the Wiener Story Of The Day stories I include in our This & That: Open Thread threads. If you select the photo, by the way, you'll be taken to all of our posts that are tagged "wieners."
If I were to do a "real" wiener story of the day today instead of this one about the picture, I'd direct you to this story from the Minnesota Examiner, entitled Travel 101: Minnesota State Fair adds Spam Hot Dogs to menu. What's not to love about a Spam Hot Dog?
So anywho...It's an open thread! What are you thinking about today, or what have you been reading this past week?
Take some time to share with us!
And again, please feel free to chat, blogwhore, and link-share in the comment thread because...it's an open thread! Woo-hoo!
