Gay News Magazine Headlines (T24T-2)

Feature Story: There are 10 naked men hanging at The DC Center.
They are all covering their genitals, part of "Member," a photo exhibit by Baltimore photographer J. Aiden Simon. Slated to run through the end of July, Member explores the different degrees of masculinity among gay, bi, straight and transgender men.

J. Aiden Simon Simon is one of the 10 standing in the buff. Meeting him, it's impossible to tell that this 20-year-old man was born with the body of a female. That's because the 5-foot, 4-inch, native of Stamford, Conn., is just one of the guys. He's certainly masculine. As one attendant during the June 26 opening night of the exhibit pointed out with a friendly laugh, You are very hairy. ...more
Gauge: With "leather boys" from as far away as Korea in attendance, the DC Boys of Leather celebrated its 10th anniversary last weekend with a "run" -- also known as a bar crawl.
''It's a tradition that dates back to the old motorcycle club days, when everyone would meet up in a certain bar,'' says Jason Carcione, president of the Boys. ''We had people from as far north as Maine and as far west as Denver.''
Carcione estimates that about 100 people attended the banquet, and about 60 attended the full weekend's roster of events, which included everything from cocktails to the group's Atlantic Motorcycle Coordinating Council meeting. ...more
Gauge: From a backyard party to one of the District's most dazzling annual events, to something of a hybrid, Abdur-Rahim Briggs has been doing his part for the local African-American community in the fight against HIV/AIDS. On July 18, the newest chapter of his story will include the 10th annual White Attire Affair, and the best opportunity yet for his new organization, Al Sura, to shine.
As a new chapter, the name of Briggs' group, Al Sura, is apt.
"It's Arabic," Briggs explains. "I wanted something that meant starting over. In the Quran, it means 'new chapter.'" ...more

Conservative lawmakers in Congress are putting the District's relationship recognition laws in jeopardy - although it seems unlikely the efforts will find much traction.

Amendments submitted Monday to the House Rules Committee for the fiscal year 2010 D.C. appropriations bill would interfere with D.C.'s recognition of same-sex marriages performed elsewhere and overturn the district's domestic partnership law.

Rep. Jason Chaffertz (R-Utah) submitted Amendment No. 16, which would invalidate D.C.'s marriage law unless D.C. voters approve it in the next general election.

"Notwithstanding any provision of the District of Colum ...

Evangelical Christian groups continued their drive Tuesday to convince West Virginia lawmakers to allow voters to define marriage in the state constitution as being between one woman and one man.

The state Family Policy Council and the n ational Alliance Defense Fund both addressed a joint legislative committee studying the issue. So did foes of their proposed amendment and a law professor considered an authority on West Virginia's constitution.

Council President Jeremy Dys said his group's in-state polling found that a growing majority favors his group's definition of marriage. He urged lawmakers to get out of their ...

Gay rights advocates in El Paso want the city to revamp its police force's training for dealing with the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities.

The request made during Tuesday's City Council meeting comes about a week after five gay men were asked to leave a popular taco shop after two of them kissed.

The group called local police and left the shop after a police officer told them they could be arrested for engaging in homosexual behavior. The U.S. Supreme Court struck down the state ban on such behavior in 2003 in the case of Lawrence vs. Texas. ...

Theresa Sparks, the transgender woman who has served two terms as president of the city’s police commission, has ruled out running for a third term. When she first won the coveted seat by one vote back in 2007, Sparks became the first transgender person to head a city oversight panel. But her ascension led to [...]

Regional sweets retailer See's Candies left its post in San Francisco's Union Square after refusing to comply with a mandate that the city's contractors grant comprehensive spousal benefits to the domestic partners of the company's gay and lesbian employees. However, after some flack, the company's president and CEO said Tuesday that See's is starting to negotiate with unions to make necessary updates to contracts to permit such benefits.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince opens Wednesday. It is the first film in the franchise to hit theaters since author J.K. Rowling announced that wizard Dumbledore is gay -- and the film's star, Daniel Radcliffe, couldn't be happier to find that there's a gay wizard at Hogwarts.
Todd Oney has joined the staff of Out & About Newspaper as an advertising sales account executive.

There was no Christian marriage sacrament until the sixteenth century. A Catholic scholar writes that “nothing is more remarkable than the tardiness with which liturgical forms for the marriage ceremony were evolved.” In fact they were not so much evolved as copied from the common law long established under paganism, and had more to do [...]
