The D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics Monday denied a petition seeking a voter referendum to overturn a city law recognizing same-sex marriages from other jurisdictions, saying such a referendum would violate the city's Human Rights Act.
"Based upon the written and oral opinions submitted to the board regarding the propriety of the referendum, as well as its own research and consideration of the matter, the board now concludes that the referendum does not present a proper subject of referendum because it would authorize discrimination prohibited under the Human Rights Act," the board states in a 12-page decision.

The Human Rights Campaign is taking President Obama to task following the release of a controversial Justice Department brief that defends the Defense of Marriage Act.
In letter sent to Obama on Monday, HRC President Joe Solmonese contests certain arguments made in the brief and urges the president to move to repeal DOMA, which prevents federal recognition of same-sex union s.
"As an American, a civil rights advocate, and a human being, I hold this administration to a higher standard than this brief," Solmonese writes.

A Michigan lawmaker said Saturday she wants to change state law to recognize gay marriages.
The proposal announced by State Rep. Pam Byrnes faces an uphill climb. Michigan voters in 2004 passed a constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman, effectively banning the legal recognition of same-sex marriage.
But Byrnes launched an effort to repeal that provision at the annual gay rights Michigan Pride event at the state's Capitol.
