More than 100 people packed a D.C. Board of Elections & Ethics hearing room Wednesday as supporters and opponents of same-sex marriage presented opposing arguments regarding the validity of a proposed referendum to overturn the city's same-sex marriage recognition law.
At issue, according to election board chair Errol Arthur, is whether the proposed referendum would cover one or more of eight restricted subject areas that are barred from going before the voters, including a proposal to raise or lower taxes or a proposal that would "unlawfully discriminate" under the D.C. Human Rights Act.

A national company that sells advertising to movie theater chains recently rejected an ad from Whitman-Walker Clinic because the clip included a reference to HIV, Clinic officials said this week.
But National CineMedia later reversed its decision and approved the ad for distribution to D.C.-area theaters.
The Clinic ad promotes its Oct. 2 AIDS Walk Washington annual fundraising event. The Clinic submitted the ad to National CineMedia to help distribute it to local theaters, but they were told that they could not use "HIV" in the ad.

It's official: Controversial Miss California Carrie Prejean has heard the words "you're fired" from the pageant's grand poobah, Donald Trump.
Trump issued a statement Wednesday saying he sacked Prejean for failing to honor her commitments as Miss California USA.
Pageant officials say Tami Farrell, the first runner-up to Prejean in the Miss California USA competition will take over those responsibilities.
