"We come in as men, men who are dancing, men who are making an impact through dance," Wilkins explains. "We're not coming in as gay men or straight men. We're coming to it just as men first. That's where the work starts from. I think there's something very special about starting from that place."
That male-centric description may seem limiting to some, but it has certainly not limited Wilkins, who specifically dubbed EDGEWORDS a contemporary-dance "theater," rather than a "company," in that it allows him and others the opportunity to express themselves beyond dance. ...more

''When I used to go to some of the early meetings in the '80s, all I saw was white women,'' Subbaraman says. ''And I couldn't identify with the white lesbians from that time. I couldn't understand how to put together those two pieces of my identity: being South Asian and being queer. So I left it alone.''
But it wasn't long before Subbaraman, who came to the District from India for graduate studies, found herself involved in KhushDC, a gay group, and Asian/Pacific Islander Queer Sisters (APIQS). She would go on to serve as Asian representative for the Mayor's Committee on LGBT Affairs from 1999 to 2002, before working as the associate director at the Office of LGBT Equity at the University of Maryland. About 2,000 people are expected at a lunchtime rally outside the Capitol today in support of gay rights legislation.
The bills would allow same-sex marriage, protect transgender civil rights, and provide safe schools for gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual youth.
Attendees at the rally will include Kate Hathaway, mother of actor Anne Hathaway; Alan Lubin of New York State United Teachers; and members of the clergy, business community and labor organizations.

Exasperation was evident among D.C. City Council members Monday as they resumed a public review of the Whitman-Walker Clinic.
During the five-hour hearing, Council members David Catania (I-At Large), Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) and Micand Michael Brown (I-At Large) peppered Clinic officials with questions regarding Whitman-Walker's financial stability and recent layoffs.
But after taking a verbal beating during a similar hearing in January, Clinic officials did more than play defense.
