Gay rights advocates are waiting to see whether federal lawmakers opposed to a hate crimes bill would introduce amendments aimed at crippling the bill when it comes up for a vote Wednesday before the House Judiciary Committee.

The bill, H.R. 1913, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009, would give federal officials authority to prosecute hate crimes targeting people because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, among other categories.

The measure also authorizes the Justice Department to provide financial and technical assistance to local and state law enforcement agencies investigating hate crime ...

D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty has replaced one of his two openly gay cabinet members, Clark Ray, as director of the city's Department of Parks & Recreation, sources familiar with the mayor's office said.

Fenty was expected to name Monday the person he picked to replace Ray. That person's identity could not be immediately obtained.

Ray, who served on Fenty's 2006 mayoral election campaign, had the rank of cabinet member in the administration since becoming head of the Parks & Recreation Department in January 2008. Christopher Dyer, a gay man who serves as director of the Mayor's Office of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transg ...

Nine men who said they were with a Pennsylvania-based group were in Bangor over the weekend protesting a gay marriage bill that has been proposed in the Maine Legislature.

The men stood at a busy intersection near the Bangor Mall on Saturday carrying signs and chanting slogans in support of traditional family values. The men told the Bangor Daily news they were members of the group American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property.
