More than $28M poured in just days before election

Donors gave more than $83 million to support or oppose the ballot initiative that abolished same-sex marriage in California, according to campaign disclosure reports made public Monday.

The new filings cover the weeks immediately before and after the Nov. 4 election. They show that elected officials, businesses, churches and individuals poured more than $28 million into the race during the contest's closing days.

The final tallies show that opponents of Proposition 8 raised $43.3 million in 2008 and had a little more than $730,000 left on hand at year's end. The measure's sponsors raised $39.9 million and had $983,000 left over. ...

The gay couple whose court battle led to the legalization of same-sex marriage in Massachusetts has filed for divorce.

Hillary and Julie Goodridge, who share custody of their 12-year-old daughter, filed divorce papers in Suffolk Probate Court last week.

“I wish I could talk them into staying together, but I don’t see how,” Hillary’s mother, Ann Kiernan Smith, told the Boston Herald. Smith did not offer a reason for the couple's divorce.

The Goodridges’ landmark lawsuit led to a state Supreme Judicial Court ruling that made Massachusetts the first state to recognize same-sex marriage in 2003. The Goodridges wer ...

Houston's elected finance chief plans to run for mayor of the nation's fourth-largest city.

City Controller Annise Parker would be Houston's first openly gay mayor if elected Nov. 3. She says her financial experience can help navigate tough economic times.

Parker is in her third term as city controller and, like Mayor Bill White, can't run for re-election because of term limits. Today is the first day candidates could raise money for the election.

The 52-year-old says she considered a mayoral run long before the economic outlook worsened, but now she can tout her experience in controlling city expenses.
