You may recall the ONDCP "Burrito Taster" ad campaign I mocked a while back (The Drug Czar's Latest Ads - Your Tax Dollars Hard at Work (even if "potheads" aren't). GanjaBlue via Twitter asked the universe for a parody of that ad featuring Michael Phelps. Your wish is my command. Feel free to copy and re-post this anywhere you like, so long as you provide a link back to the Stash. -- "R"R
Six weeks into an investigation by California's Fair Political Practices Commission, the Church of Latter-Day Saints has admitted that it spent nearly $188,000 more on the campaign to approve Proposition 8 that it had initially stated. The commission could fine the church up to $5K per violation. Obviously the church leadership will pass the plate around to the faithful. I wonder if the economy will affect the donations to "the cause" of protecting marriage in California. The Mormon Church previously insisted that it spent only $2,078 to support the ban on same-sex marriage, something LGBT leaders said was implausible in light of a number of visits to California by high ranking church officials, ads allegedly produced with church funds and the large number of church staffers working on the campaign.
In November, Californians Against Hate filed a complaint with the Fair Political Practices Commission accusing the church of failing to report the value of work it did to support Prop 8.
...In a new filing with the state, the church now admits that among other expenses were $96,849 for "compensated staff time" for church employees who worked on the campaign, $20,575 for the use of facilities and equipment at its Salt Lake City headquarters, $26,000 for audio-visual production and travel expenses for church leaders to go to California.
"This is exactly what we were talking about when we filed the suit," Fred Karger of Californians Against Hate told the San Francisco Chronicle.
New Chicago Public Schools CEO Ron Huberman has now come out in a profile published in the Chicago Sun-Times. Here is some biography:
"Huberman was born in Israel to a family with Holocaust survivors on both sides. When he was 5, his family moved from Israel to Oak Ridge, Tenn., where his father, a scientist specializing in cancer research and cell mutation, took a research job. Seven years later, an offer at Argonne National Laboratories brought the family to La Grange.
At 15, while attending Lyons Township High School, Huberman made a declaration that, at first, was difficult for his parents to accept: He's gay.
"It's always difficult for kids. It was difficult for my parents at first. But they've become very accepting and very supportive," said Huberman, who lives with a partner who's a friend from college. They reconnected four years ago.
"It has given me a great sensitivity for the need to be inclusive. If I didn't grow up being part of a group that was viewed differently, I may not have that sensitivity. It makes me in tune to individuals, groups and others who are not fitting in and may need extra support."
While he has an unusual perspective on the issue, Huberman refused to say where he stands on the stalled proposal for a gay high school."

Don't get me wrong, I get a kick out of the fact that Huberman is out for the world to see (it was common knowledge in city government and I have seen him out and about on a couple of occasions and I ain't talking about on the -el!) but there is the question of motivation in putting this out there now. Huberman, who had been running the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is a controversial pick for the CPS due to the fact that he (like Arne Duncan) has no teaching experience or education experience. Also, this was not Arne Duncan's choice for a replacement. I am still keeping an eye on the political fallout on the Huberman pick generally, and Huberman being out specifically.
