Equality Maryland, the state’s largest gay civil rights group, was revealed this week to be among the many peaceful protest groups that were once designated a “security threat” by state officials.

The Washington Post reported Friday that the Maryland State Police’s Homeland Security & Intelligence Division gave Equality Maryland the designation and considered the organization a terrorist group. The designation has since been rescinded.

A prominent gay fundraiser for President Barack Obama has been tapped to become the new finance director for the Democratic National Committee.

Rufus Gifford, who worked with his partner Jeremy Bernard to raise millions of dollars through their company, B&G Associates, for Obama’s campaign in California, is expected to step into the role.

John Marble, a spokesperson for the National Stonewall Democrats, lauded the new role for Gifford. He said the election of Gifford as the DNC's finance director, along with the election of Ray Buckley as a DNC vice chair and Andy Tobias as the DNC's treasurer, were welcome moves.

Just three weeks after Sam Adams was sworn in, many gays are questioning whether he is the man they want as their trailblazer.

"Sam has been our guy forever, which makes this even harder," said Marty Davis, publisher of the newspaper Just Out, which has called for his resignation. "It's completely dividing and tearing our community right down the middle."

DENVER — Disgraced evangelical leader Ted Haggard's former church disclosed Friday that the gay sex scandal that caused his downfall extends to a young male church volunteer who reported having a sexual relationship with Haggard, a revelation that comes as Haggard tries to repair his public image.

Brady Boyd, who succeeded Haggard as senior pastor of the 10,000-member New Life Church in Colorado Springs, told the Associated Press that the man came forward to church officials in late 2006 shortly after a Denver male prostitute claimed to have had a three-year cash-for-sex relationship with Haggard.

President Barack Obama has a selected a gay man for a key White House role that focuses on recruiting federal employees, according to the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund.

Mark Perriello is slated to start his job Monday as a director in the Office of Presidential Personnel, which recruits candidates for appointments to federal departments and agencies.

Perriello served as head of the Presidential Appointments Project, an effort by 12 national gay groups to identify gay candidates to serve in the Obama administration.
