Threatening Letters Spark New Prop 8 Controversy
Last Updated: 10-23-08 at 1:43PM
A threatening letter has sparked a new controversy here in San Diego surrounding the gay marriage debate. Donors who gave money to the No on Prop 8 campaign say they received blackmail letters demanding money, and the Yes on 8 campaign now says the letters were sent by their employees.
Yes on 8 first denied sending the blackmail letters, but later called the reporter and admitted they did, in fact, send them. They claimed they had no choice due to the success of the Californians Against Hate boycott of the Manchester Hotels.
Crossposted at my blog with a a tip of the blogging beret to Justin McLachlan, and congratulations to Californians Against Hate.
Wow. That's a bucketful of crazy. Let's give a little background on Janet Porter/Folger and pull out some of the video lowlights after the jump...
Consider the Source: Getting to Know Janet
You might recall that Janet Folger/Porter gave Mayor Naugle of Fort Lauderdale the "Family Protector of the Year" award after his anti-gay crusade in South Florida. She also flip-flopped over McCain, at first saying only "sheep" would vote for McCain over Huckabee, then putting on her Little Bo Peep costume to guide the sheep over to McCain's corner after endorsing him when he secured the nomination.
She also had that winning rant called "Anita Bryant was right" on World Net Daily. And who can forget her reaction to the California decision for marriage equality, when Porter/Folger let loose the very scientific theory that gay marriage is a sign of the apocalypse.
Yeah. She's basically James Dobson with lipstick and a computer.
With this video, Janet again jumps on the crazy train (heck, she's the conductor of it) and unleashes a torrent of offensive, fear-mongering "predictions" if Obama becomes President.
Janet on Gays
As promised, President Obama also overturned the Defense of Marriage Act, which was signed by President Bill Clinton. This is sure to spread homosexual marriage not just in Massachusetts, California and Connecticut, but to states like Pennsylvania, Florida and Colorado. President Obama, as he said during the campaign, opposes any efforts to protect marriage by state amendment. He also made good on his campaign promise to use the bully pulpit of the White House to place vulnerable orphan children in the homes of homosexual activists who demanded it during their Gay Pride Parade.
Janet on Terrorism
The "Death to America Coalition" released a statement: "We have not celebrated like this since 9/11!"
President Obama thanked campaign contributor William Ayers by appointing him as director of Homeland Security. Ayers, who bombed the Pentagon, and after 9/11 said he wished he could have done more, in a statement released today, said, "Now I can."
President Obama's close friend, mentor and pastor of 20 years, Jeremiah Wright, accepted the appointment to oversee the president's Faith Based Initiative program with the condition he would quit calling for God to damn America in public.
Janet on a Woman's Right to Choose
President Obama followed through on his campaign promise to sign the "Freedom of Choice Act" as his first act in office. This effectively wipes out every pro-life law from parental notice to every ban on partial-birth abortion in all 50 states.
? NICKIE NAEVE, 14 year old: "Now that Obama's president, I can get an abortion and mom or dad will never ever know!"
? SANDY SLAUGHTER from KTAI (Kill Them All International): "You just worked 36 years for nothing! When Obama won we won! Ha!"The only thing left of the abortion agenda not yet accomplished is the forced abortion policy of China.
Janet on Michelle Obama
First lady Michelle Obama spent the day reading from her favorite books to elementary school children.
MICHELLE OBAMA READING TO CHILDREN: "Mr. Ayers knew America was a bad country so he and his lovely wife formed a club called 'The Weather Underground.' (To children) Can you say 'Weather Underground'?"
CHILDREN REPEAT: "Weather Underground."
MICHELLE: "They took action and stood up for what they believed (turning children's book page) in the Pentagon ..."
CHILDREN: "Ka-Boom!"
JOHNNIE RAISES HIS HAND: "Mrs. Obama? Did Mr. Ayers ever say he was sorry for blowing up the Pentagon?"
MICHELLE: "No, but nobody really cares about that. Let's move to our next book, "Heather and Her Two Mommies aren't Proud of their Imperialist Country.'"
Damn it, Janet. That's some crazy, homophobic, race-baiting terror talk.
And this is the woman that got upset when a Florida University invited the Phelps Clan from Westboro Baptist Church to debate Amendment 2, saying they were too "radical" and made the "pro-marriage people" look bad?
I think you are doing a great job of that all by yourself, Janet...

There is a 12-year-old girl missing in my town. Her name is Tekenya Wooten, and she hasn't been seen since Saturday. Investigators here in Durham have been unable to locate the 12-year-old, who is black, 5'1", eight months pregnant and was last seen wearing her hair in a ponytail.Investigators believe Tekenya Wooten ran away from her Durham residence at 3529 Manford Drive. Although her disappearance does not meet the criteria for an Amber Alert, according to a news release issued this afternoon, the Durham Police Department "is very concerned about her welfare and we are actively looking for her."This story is so sad on so many levels. How and why this 12-year-old child is pregnant is a huge cause for concern, as is the fact that she ran away from a group home too many balls have been dropped, never mind that a child rapist is out there.Anyone with information about Tekenya's location should contact Durham Police Detective T.M. Ochman at 560-4440, ext. 289.
Gina of What About Our Daughters has been way out ahead of this, and asked some pointed questions of law enforcement, city officials and the media about why this has garnered so little attention.
"I'm concerned that the Durham Police Department has classified Tekenya Wooten as a "runaway" versus "high risk" as a result of this classification, no media outlet will cover her story. This reduces the chances that this young woman will be recovered. The fact that she is 12 years old and the birth of her child is imminent means that not only is this young girl in danger, but so is the life of her child. I am equally disturbed that the police department has done nothing further than take its cue from a group home that has an incentive to classify this child as a "run a way" for administrative purposes. A 100 pound 12-year-old can't RUN anywhere. Has she been classified in this way because she is poor? Has she been classified this way because she is Black? Has she been classified this way because she is pregnant? Has she been classified this way because she lived in a group home? Why doesn't the City of Durham think that a 12 year old pregnant child who is missing is not high risk? "Also, link up to Wayne's and Rock's coverage.
As Chancellor of UC Berkeley, I am writing to inform you of the likely impacts on our campus of the passage of Proposition 8, a ballot initiative that would eliminate the right of same-sex couples to civil marriage in the State of California. Of course, all members of the Berkeley community must exercise their own best judgment in deciding on how they wish to vote on this ballot measure. It should be noted that Birgeneau's measured argument is really speaking to the choir. The fundies rallying in support of Prop 8 will be more than happy to point out the message coming from the ivory tower of academia is part of the problem from their POV.In June of this year, the California Supreme Court reaffirmed the constitutional right to marry for same-sex couples. This ruling supports UC Berkeley's commitment to equity and inclusion by recognizing the family relationships of all members of our campus community, including lesbian and gay faculty, staff and students.
Proposition 8 is in conflict with the principles of equity and inclusion to which our campus is committed. Berkeley supports the full inclusion and equal treatment of all members of our community and we have affirmed the position that any treatment of individuals that is not equal and inclusive is discriminatory. In denying a fundamental civil right, passage of Proposition 8 would undermine these principles, not just for our LGBTQ community, but for all racial, religious and cultural minorities and would harm the university as a whole.
Inclusion provides the rich diversity of intellectual life and creative learning that are at the heart of this great university. Inclusiveness is a specific strategic advantage that allows us to attract and retain talented people who could easily choose to move to other parts of the country. For example, in Massachusetts, home to Harvard and MIT, who are among our greatest competitors for faculty, same-sex marriage has been legal for some years. It is recognized in states such as New York, home to Columbia and Cornell, who are also major rivals for top faculty. The constitutional right to marry in the State of California enhances UC Berkeley's ability to attract and retain the very best students, staff and faculty, with the promise of equal treatment under the laws of our state. Social theorist Richard Florida has shown that the economic success of American cities is based on their ability to attract a "creative class" of "talented people who seek an environment open to differences." Proposition 8 will harm the social conditions in our state that promote creativity, justice, and prosperity.
Although you must judge for yourselves how to vote, as you consider your ballot on November 4, 2008, I would urge you to take into account the impacts that passage of Proposition 8 would have on our campus community.
Robert J. Birgeneau
Chancellor, UC Berkeley
