Not to long ago I was returning to the USA from Canada. I'm a US citizen (born in Kentucky) and the son of a military officer.
I made a wrong turn, ended up off the beaten path and received directions at a gas station. What I didn't realize was they sent me to the closest crossing (which was not the "most active" border crossing).
I arrived at the border crossing late in the evening. After being away from my country for a couple months I was expecting the "welcome home" treatment. Instead I was treated as if I was a criminal.
I was told I could not put my hands in my pockets while speaking to them. They searched my motorhome. They drilled me about other countries I had visited in my travels (I've been to Malaysia - they didn't like that).
It made me realize our country is one step away from totalitarianism.
I guess I'm supposed to feel safer now because we have assholes at the border? Not in the least bit!
As they say, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely!
